technique

There are two standard fighting stances in boxing; orthodox, and southpaw.

Orthodox is for standard right handed boxers.

Note that the fighter keeps their dominant right hand tucked back and uses their left hand to jab. They also keep their left foot out first.

The Southpaw stance is for left hand dominant boxers and is an exact mirror of the Orthodox stance.

Weight classes

In the sport of boxing, fighters are separated into classes determined by their weight.
  1. Unlimited weight             Heavyweight
  2. 200 lbs                                  cruiserweight
  3. 175 lbs                                  light heavyweight
  4. 168 lbs                                  super middleweight
  5. 160 lbs                                  middleweight
  6. 154 lbs                                  super welterweight
  7. 147 lbs                                  super lightweight
  8. 135 lbs                                  lightweight
  9. 130 lbs                                  super featherweight
  10. 126 lbs                                  featherweight
  11. 122 lbs                                  super bantamweight
  12. 118 lbs                                  bantamweight
  13. 115 lbs                                  super flyweight
  14. 112 lbs                                  flyweight
  15. 108 lbs                                  light flyweight
  16. 105 lbs                                  minimumweight
These weight classes are to avoid unfair matches due to size, and are usually determined at a "weigh-in" before the match.

The "weigh-in" is done the day before the match and both fighters are weight by scales and media uses this as an opportutiy to take pictures.

Should a fighter not make the designated weight for a match they may weigh again but should the weight be deemed too great to lose in the short amount of time the fight may be cancelled.

Introduction

My name is Jesus Robles. I currently am enrolled in Lone Star Community College

I chose to do this blog over my favorite sport; boxing.

Boxing became my favorite sport mainly due to my dad, he also enjoys watching boxing and I remember watching matches with him when I was younger. My enjoyment of boxing soon expanded from just watching boxing to also reading of boxing. One of my favorite manga series to read is Hajime no Ippo, a story of a young man discovering a love of boxing and then fighting and growing in his matches.
